equisetum 1024x874 Dreaming of Warmer Weather

I am still waiting for warm spring weather to arrive, it’s a bit cold so I thought I would post some tropical ikebana to warm things up. These were both done for the demonstration last month. Very slowly I am getting things posted, and creating some new work. As always I am searching for inspiration (and warmer weather!).

365 Days of Ikebana-Day 362

Friday, July 13th, 2012

Here are two variations of an arrangement using curved and straight lines. Once again today I braided some palm to use, still trying to pratice and refine the skill. There is something I like about both and could not decide which I liked better so I thought I would show both.

Vertical ikebana with branch hydrangea and braided palm leaf 874x1024 365 Days of Ikebana Day 361

All day today it has rained, so that made it more difficult to get out and find materials to use. However my Mom brought home a huge palm from the grocery store this morning for me to use(hooray and thanks Mom!). So now I have palm to practice braiding, and that is what I did. I only did the one today to try to conserve my palm and not cut it all at once. The best part is that after not doing this for a few weeks I remembered how to do it right away, and it was quick and simple. For me that is a big success, being able to do it from memory and to do it fast too. I did have some work to be able to make the palm with with the materials I did have on hand and came up with this vertical ikebana. The braided palm really excites me and now I have to pratice more and move on to other variations.

Braided phoenix palm globe thistle and balloon flower1 682x1024 365 Days of Ikebana Day 342

Today I did a little more work on braiding palm leaves, this time with phoenix palm. It has a very small leaf, interesting to work with but I think the areca palm I uesed a few days ago works much better. However I did learn more about how to do the braiding, so I will call it a success. Now I just have to buy some areca palm plants to I have plenty of material to work with.
