Layer by Layer – My Hoogstraten Construction Takes Shape

Each year, creating a piece for Hoogstraten Groenten & Bloemen is both a challenge and a privilege. It’s a chance to step beyond daily practice and let construction itself carry a story. For me, a botanical construction is never just a support for flowers — it is sculpture, rhythm, and movement, already alive before the first bloom is added.

This year, my design begins with a wood base that has been reused and reinterpreted. Much of the beauty of Hoogstraten is in how materials are given second lives: structures recycled, forms reshaped, ideas renewed. Reuse and reinterpretation have become part of my own process — honoring what has already been built while pushing it into a new expression.

As the construction grows, branches, wire wrapped with yarn, and texture create lines that hold both balance and tension. It is a dialogue between what has been before and what it is becoming now. By the time flowers enter the picture, the structure already speaks — the botanicals simply add their voice to the story.

The piece will be unveiled on Friday evening, September 19, when the exhibition opens to the public. I look forward to sharing the finished work — both here and on Instagram — and inviting you into the conversation between sustainability, construction, and artistry.
