My Sogetsu Ikebana class lesson last night was using one material only, gladiolas. I thought the arrangement I did was acceptable although I could only think of the gladiolas as line material. maybe I saw them more as line material becuase there weren’t a lot of open blooms. My sensei suggested that the materials would be best highlighted if we only featured the blooms. Today I used the blooms that had opened to try to give a different interpretation. The mass of blooms was lovely but needed something to add some drama. After a look through various materials I had to use I found a nice branch of kiwi vine that I had painted white. It was exactly what I needed, both in adding another color and an interesting curved line. Truly a harmonious surprise!
