It’s the 365th day of my project at last. When I started this project a year ago I had my doubts about whether or not I could make it beyond a month or two. Over the many months I have learned to create daily, good or bad, to just make it happen as part of my daily routine. It been a great year and I want to thank eveyone who has encouraged me, and given me a boost of energy and inspiration to keep going on. My biggest thanks goes to my partner Frederick for his love and support, I could not have done it without him. My plans from here forward are to continue to create daily. I may take a break for a week or two now, but I do plan keep striving to grow as an artist and challenge myself to keep learning and growing. I may even do a second year of this project, but to be honest I just don’t know yet. What I can say with certainty is that I will be posting here regularly. Again, many thanks to all of you for making the past 365 days so wonderful!!!

This moribana was made by quickly cutting some materials between rain storms today. No complaints about the rain because it is watering the garden. I had hoped to do some more work, but the rain cut short my outdoor time. As a bonus today I am posting below an earler version fo the arrangement from July 12. Often I might make many versions or one with lots of adjustments to get it right, not that they’re not god but I come up with one that I feel is better.

Here are two variations of an arrangement using curved and straight lines. Once again today I braided some palm to use, still trying to pratice and refine the skill. There is something I like about both and could not decide which I liked better so I thought I would show both.

All day today it has rained, so that made it more difficult to get out and find materials to use. However my Mom brought home a huge palm from the grocery store this morning for me to use(hooray and thanks Mom!). So now I have palm to practice braiding, and that is what I did. I only did the one today to try to conserve my palm and not cut it all at once. The best part is that after not doing this for a few weeks I remembered how to do it right away, and it was quick and simple. For me that is a big success, being able to do it from memory and to do it fast too. I did have some work to be able to make the palm with with the materials I did have on hand and came up with this vertical ikebana. The braided palm really excites me and now I have to pratice more and move on to other variations.

With the wildflowers and assorted garden flowers I collected today I did this arrangement, not ikebana but appropriate for the materials collected. I’ve wanted to do more tof this type of design also, so maybe there will be more in the next year. In this arrangment are stems of asters, astillbe, butterfly bush, begonia, queen anne’s lace, daisies, mountain mint, grassses, ferns, artemesia and coreopsis, placed in an antique pitcher. It was a dark dreary day with a threat of rain and I thought I would not be able to get out to pick anything, luckily the rain held off and I gathered some nice stuff. Once again I felt a bit conflicted that it wasn’t ikebana, but it flowed together quickly with ease, at that point I knew it was the right arrangment for today.

Short and sweet is my ikebana for day, allium and a squash leaf gleaned from the vegetable garden. For today it works, but I need to find some flowers. Maybe tomorrow I will venture out and go down by the lake to see what I can find. I did find some great apple branches to use, the remanants of my Dad’s apple tree that was cut down to make room for a paved road. My family has lived here for five generations on a one lane dirt road, and now it is being widened in preparation for the pavement to go down making it a state road. The loss of amny trees has been a big shock to see, and made me a bit heartsick. The family wants it to be easier to get out during the snowy winters here, and I guess the progress makes sense for them. I miss the trees. At least I managed to grab a piece of what was cast aside to make something. Look for it in a few days here.

Two things I have in abundance here at my parents house, branches and beautiful hydrangeas. To make the Hana-dome for this ikebana I used only branches that had fallen in storms during the last week. I’m hoping that the dahlias will have blooms soon, and the garden may yield more flowers after the rains that started tonight. During the last week I’ve fertilized, mulched, deadheaded plants and bushes, and transplanted a few new plants to help bring more into bloom.
